Awards

I've been very fortunate to have been awarded scholarships and other awards while at the University of California, Irvine and at Minnesota State University, Mankato.  I cannot phrase how thankful I am to the parties involved. Below is a sampling of these awards.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

I was very lucky to have won a NSF fellowship to help support my PhD work while at UC Irvine. This three-years of support program is one of the most prestigious awards available to science graduate students in the nation. For more information, please see this site.

Phan To Su Memorial Chemistry Scholarship

August 22, 2011

For the 2011 - 2012 and 2012-2013 academic years, I was awarded the very generous $4000 Phan To Su memorial Chemistry scholarship.  I cannot say how thankful I am to the family and the Mary Ella Jerome foundation and the family.

Maverick Momentum Scholarship

For fall 2012, I was awarded the Maverick Momentum Undergraduate Scholarship for $1000.  This award is directly tied to the wonderful and fruitful times I had with the adaptive ski program in Mankato (MAASP).

Kaufmanis German Scholarship

August 23, 2010

The German department awarded me the $300 Kaufmanis Scholarship for the Fall Semester of 2010.  This scholarship is in memory of Dr. Kaufmanis, who asked students waiting in registration lines if they were taking a language.  If not, she would sign them up on the spot.

Honors

MSU and the general community honored my work through my years at MSU, and I cannot phrase how indebted I am to everyone for this recognition.  The honor should not go all to me, though, as my advisors, mentors, and friends/family have helped me get to where I am today.  They truly deserve as much credit as I've been given.  Please see below for some recognition.

Goldwater Scholarship Nomination

I was exceedingly fortunate to be nominated for a Goldwater Scholarship through MSU.  This award is the most prestigious nationwide scholarship for undergraduates in Science and Mathematics fields.  A university can nominate up to four applicants per year, and I was the only nominee in a few years from MSU.

MSU Big Ideas Campaign

MSU's largest marketing campaign in its history has kicked off a $75 million goal to raise for the university.  As a result of my work in Germany, and MSU's new slogan "Big Ideas, Real World Thinking," I was able to speak extemporaneously at the campaign launch about my work in Germany and how it is a big idea, but has real world thinking.  It was an absolutely phenomenal, one-of-a-kind experience to do this.

MSU's marketing area then filmed a commercial to broadcast on television.  That very commercial can be found embedded below.

After this commercial, I joined other people who have had commercials made on them and donors at the event "Purple, Gold, and Guthrie" where I networked with donors and was able to share my story.

This entire sequence of events taught me the importance of networking, how to tactfully address the need for more funds for programs, and better public speaking skills than even in a course.

I thank all of the people who have made this real, and I also wish to show other people what is truly possible from a great institution.
